Mathematics

At Downlands Community School, we believe that mathematics is an essential skill that enables us to make sense of the world around us. Through discussion, reasoning and recognising that making mistakes is part of our learning journey, children will become confident problem solvers.  Daily mathematics lessons will ensure our pupils develop their core math skills, whilst developing their key fluency and number skills.  All our pupils will have the opportunity to learn through a CPA (Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract) approach and have the opportunity to develop a wide range of strategies to solve real life problems.

Downlands Community School is a maintained school within Dorset Local Authority, therefore we will follow the Primary National Curriculum.  We are on a journey as a school community developing a mastery approach to mathematics.  The following policy describes the vision and pedagogical principles for teaching and learning mathematics, which has been agreed by staff and governors.
