In Chestnuts (FS2), we encourage the children to read with their parents on a regular basis to help them on their reading journey. We send home phonic sound flashcards and high frequency words for the children to learn by sight. At times, we may ask parents to help their children with letter formation and number formation practice.
In Key Stage One, we expect children to read to an adult for at least 10 minutes daily for at least 5 days of the week. We encourage parents to ask the children questions about their reading. Look, cover, write check spellings, from the common exception words, are sent home weekly. We encourage parents to help their children to learn number bonds to 5, 10 and 20, count in 2s, 5s, 10s initially and then in 3s and 4s in Y2 as well as learning the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.
In Lower Key Stage Two, we set fortnightly homework for maths, spelling and reading. Times Tables Rockstars is used to help improve children’s fluency in times tables. Spelling practice sheets will be sent home on a Tuesday and the children should be reading daily (at least three times a week with an adult). In addition, we will also set research project work for either our humanities or science topic.
In Upper Key Stage 2, we set weekly homework of English, mathematics and reading. Children are set units to complete on web based mathematics sites and a weekly spelling list is shared to allow pupils to practise. All children are required to read at least three times a week with an adult at home. We also set one extended project per term which is based on our humanities or science topics.
