Downlands Community School Home Learning
This is our ‘Home Learning’ offer for pupils and parents. We hope that this allows pupils to have some form of structure during an enforced period of home learning, during the school term time.
E-Tutoring from Class Teacher*
- Your class teacher will send daily class messages to guide the learning using Tapestry. (Please refer to technical guidance below regarding access to this). They may reference other online learning sites that are familiar to pupils. However, they will also recommend many non-screen activities.
Tapestry can also be used for mutual, bespoke feedback.
- You now have access to 3 online learning programmes – Education City, Epic And BrainPop. There are instructions on how to access these on Tapestry. Some of the online learning may refer to these programmes.
- You can also contact your class teacher via the school office, who will forward any emails to teachers on a daily basis, using a clear subject header: Message for Mrs B or Mrs Loveless.
Updates from the school
- The school office will forward the weekly school newsletter each Friday using emails. This will contain any updates regarding school opening as well as providing a link to what other children have been learning about.
- The headteacher will use his Twitter Account (@DownlandsHead) as much as possible to provide regular contact and updates. He can also be contacted via email (email@example.com).
- You should all be able to access Tapestry by now and thank you for some of the fantastic feedback and activities your child has been up to in the last few weeks. If you are still unsure how to access Tapestry please email the school and we will gladly solve the problem out for you.
- Parents should already be signed up to receiving school newsletters and other email communications from the school office, as part of the initial admissions process. If you feel you currently do not receive emails from the office, please get in touch.
- The front page of the school website has a Twitter Feed which will also be used for communication (@DownlandsSchool and @DownlandsHead).
- In the event of not being able to receive information from school or ongoing technical problems that might prevent the E-Tutoring described above, please email the school office (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Our school still remains committed to safeguarding. With three Deputy Safeguarding Leads: Miss Hoare, Mrs Williams and Mrs Goodall, plus the overall Designated Safeguarding Lead – Mr Rielly, who are all still very much on hand to offer support and guidance or direct towards other agencies who might be better able to respond during these difficult times. Please email Mr Rielly with any concerns relating to safeguarding or welfare of children (email@example.com). Alternatively, the Children’s Advice and Duty Service (01305 228 866) is a central point of contact for anyone worried about the safety or wellbeing of a child or young person who lives in Dorset.
All activities suggested by your class teacher will be appropriate to your child’s age group. Some activities may point to simple and safe ‘practical’ activities. Nevertheless, it is intended that all activities should be supervised by a responsible adult.
Actions to take now
- To ensure that the E-Tutoring can work, please ensure that you have taken the necessary actions (see technical advice) to allow you to receive messages from the class teacher using Tapestry.
- Ensure that you have logged in/signed up to the 3 online learning programmes we have set up for you – Education City, Epic and BrainPop. The instructions are on Tapestry (you may need to scroll down to find them). Please get in touch via Tapestry if you are having any difficulties with these.
- Establish an area where your child could work. Put up the recommended structure above so that they get used to the expectation of home learning.
- Please get in touch with the school if you have a lack of internet and/or smartphone, tablet or PC in your house. If necessary, we will provide extra paper-based resources.
- Find suitable reading books, encyclopedias, dictionaries and non-fiction books which could be used as part of home learning.
